 WELCOME TO MADEIRA 2004

7th International Bridge Festival

Sweden Leads

Yesterday, 25 teams sat down for the tournament.

The spirits were high, the minds were sharp and the first three rounds went.

RAPP - Goran Petersson, Calle Ragnarsson, Anders Petersson and Jan-Olov Anders-son – won all rounds by 16-14, 25-1 and 21-9 and lead with 62 VPs, closely followed by Impar, with 60 VPs, and Baleal with 59 VPs.

Despite some few swings, the first five teams are only 6 VPs appart, and half of the teams are within 15 VPs of 1st place.

Check out the actual classification on the next page, the results on page 2.

If you want to know who’s who in the teams, go to page 5.

Today is the day. Six rounds will establish who can get to the prizes. Or will they?

Who will go on to the viewgraph?

Lots of players want it – Only a few will achieve it: Those who have worked for it.

CONDITIONS OF CONTEST

  1. This tournament is run on 12x8 boards. On the first round the organization will seed the teams at its discretion. Pairings for this round are made by seeded draw. From the 2nd up to the round before the last, all pairings are made according to the Swiss principle. On the last round pairings are made according to the Danish principle (1st against 2nd, 3rd against 4th, etc.). If ahead by more than 25 VPs before the last round, the leading team will be paired against the last (non bye), the 2nd against the 3rd, and so on.
  2. In case of an odd number of teams, a bye in each round will be designated between the teams with the lowest ranking. The bye team will be assigned a total of 18 VPs for the round. For the 1st round the TD will designate the bye team. No team will be bye twice.
  3. IMP results will be converted to VP´s on the international scale. Ties for prize-winning places will be broken first by difference of IMPs for and against. If a tie remains, then IMP quotient and total IMP scores are considered. If a tie still remains, teams will share the prize(s).
  4. Systems allowed according to the EBL Policy (no yellow or brown stickers).
  5. Time of play is 7 minutes per board. Penalties for late play are assigned on a "5 min/1 VP" basis. Very slow matches may have part of the boards withdrawn. After the end of the round both teams have 8 minutes to agree on the IMP score and handle the official results form, signed by both captains, to the results' desk. Delays are automatically penalized on a "3 min/1 VP" basis.
  6. For seating and other procedural errors, the General Portuguese Norms apply. For the special case where two teams seat on the same line for a whole match, if there is time for a replay, it will take place and both teams are penalized 3VP. If there are no conditions for the replay, the match is scored with 10 VPs for each team.
  7. Each time that an opponent is seriously inconvenienced by an incomplete or missing convention card, the offending side will be awarded a penalty of 6 IMPs, independently of any further adjustments on the result of the board.
  8. Appeals will be judged as quickly as possible. Pending appeals will not affect the pairings for subsequent rounds. A deposit of 35 € will be required from the appealing part. The deposit will be forfeited if the appeals committee judges the appeal to be frivolous or unjustified.
  9. The Regulations inserted in the official program and the Portuguese Tournament Norms will apply as a complement to the International Code of Bridge and the present Conditions of Contest. In case of conflict, priorities are: 1) International Code (´97 edition), WBF adendas and Code of Practice; 2) These Conditions of Contest; 3) Regulations; 4) Portuguese Norms. All doubtful cases will be judged by the Tournament Direction and the Organization. The Chief TD is allowed to use 12C3 in order to restore equity, as recommended by the WBF Code of Practice

Computer Deals

Everybody complains about computer deals. They always seem to generate freak hands, with eight card suits and with everything behaving badly. It is with a sigh of relief – finally away from those computer weird deals - that you pick up your hand delt hand sitting South.
You refrain from asking if the hand was shuffled, but only because you would have remembered if such a hand arose during the pairs tournament. When you are preparing to start with the strongest bid in your arsenal you are surprised by your right hand opponent that opens the bidding in 1© . Things are getting weirder all the time. You double, LHO passes, partner bids 1ª (not bad) and RHO bids 2§ . Now what? Let’s say you cue-bid 2© , partner replies 2ª . Now you cue-bid 3§ and partner again reverts to spades. Ok. It’s enough. You get tired of cue-biding and just bid 6¨! This gets passed around and dummy comes up with:

§ A x x x

X!X?X computer deals! And the opponents weren’t even nice enough to lead a Club. Trying for some miracle you end up two down vulnarable. Just your luck! The worse is that the guy that holds 2 trumps also holds 4 spades, so without a trump lead 5
¨ is cold. It looks like a lot of imps can be exchanged here…

And they were. You end up winning 9 IMP’s on the board! On the other room, and after a lot of cue-biding, North interpreted South’s 6¨ as a choice of slams and duly chose 6ª ! After a Heart lead declarer was reduced to 6 tricks! Well… these computer hands are not so bad after all.

This is a true story. It happened yesterday to Carlos Pimenta. Other names have been omitted to protect the innocent.

The boards of table 1, in the closed room, will be broadcasted live in the Internet.

It will be possible to watch them through Bridge Base Online. Viewers can download the program from www.bridgebase.com

This table will begin at the same time as the others and will play the first two boards. Then, they start playing the other boards that have been played in the open room.

Viewers will know the results before they see the boards being played.

This was possible with the help of our friend Henry Schweitzer.
